Frequently Asked Questions

How does SitchPRO actually work?

Made of surgical steel, it has texture in the working end to securely hold the suture needle without blunting the needle tip while you are suturing. With a finger ring attached to the end, you can confidently hold it in your support hand and continue to use the needle driver in your dominant hand. The obvious and main protective advantage is holding the needle securely in place while suturing so that the bloody needle is not flopping loosely around the patient’s face, or left to be held in your hand with no way to guarantee that it will not poke you despite your best efforts. Secondary advantages of the StitchPRO is the tissue forceps tip at the end to help hold tissue flaps as you pass the suture needle through. It is also excellent at holding the tongue down as you pass the suture needle through tissue flaps in the posterior region of the mouth. Once the suturing is complete, your team member will trim the suture away from the suture needle that is still securely in the StitchPRO, leaving the needle protected and in place so that no-one gets accidentally poked during operatory cleanup. Simply trim the suture, leave the suture needle in the StitchPRO and when ready, open the StitchPRO and let the suture needle drop right into the sharps container. No one needs to risk touching the needle at any point in its usage.

As a general protocol, the operator is driving the suture needle through tissue, and in some fashion, holding onto the suture needle during the tying process. Since the StitchPRO is small and held by your support hand, rather than holding the suture needle with a thinly gloved hand, you would simply hold the suture needle with the StitchPRO and proceed to tie in the normal fashion you are used to. When it comes to placing the bloody suture needle back into the needle driver in the appropriate orientation for the next tissue pass through, rather than using your thinly gloved fingers for the task, you would simply use the StitchPRO to pass the bloody suture needle to your needle driver. Will it change your suturing protocol? Possibly. But, within a few times of using it, you just might find you will prefer it here on out for the significant advantages and protection that it offers.
